5 Tips to Accessorize like a Pro
Posted on June 04 2016
As you can guess, I love accessories. Accessorizing an outfit is an easy and inexpensive way to elevate your style, giving you that polished, put-together look you crave. Accessorizing doesn't have to be stressful or complicated. Today I will share with you 5 tips to accessorize like a pro.
First, let's make a list of accessories you most likely have in your wardrobe:
- Jewelry- necklaces, earrings, braceletes, rings
- Scarves- patterned and colorful
- Shoes- heels, flats, boots, sandals
- Bags & Purses- everyday and evening
- Belts- at least 3 or 4 belts of different thickness and colors
- Kuhfs- you didn't think I was going to forget that one did you?
Above is a simple outfit for which I used minimal accessories to complete. Kuhfs are the "Star of the Show" so I didn't want them competing with a lot of large accessories. I have on simple earrings, a delicate necklace, and a few fun beaded bracelets. I selected a small clutch so I didn't weigh down the outfit with a huge bag.
5 Tips to Accessorize like a Pro-
1. Less is More.
As Coco Channel would say- "Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory". Accessories are meant to compliment an outfit, not over power it.
2. Make a Statement.
An accessory is a great way to make a statement with your outfit, but only one piece should do the talking. Here are a few examples of a statement piece:
The necklace is bold so that is all you need. This pop of red makes a fun statement.
The Scarf makes a bold statement Although small, the belt is the statement here; a big necklace would ruin this look.
3. Play with Color.
Experiment with color to liven up your look. If you're wearing all black, select a colorful purse, shoes or scarf to draw attention and bring your outfit to life. Remember, your shoes and purse do not have to match. Play with different color combinations like pairing silver and gold jewelry. I think I gave this to you before, but here it is again. This is a great chart to help you play with different color combination. Use these combinations in your accessories.
4. Incorporate Current Trends
I don't have the budget to be constantly buying the latest fashion trends each season. I use accessories to bring an outfit up to date and incorporate current trends. Fringe and tassels are super hot this season so I will buy a cute tassel necklace or tassel sandals to wear this Summer. It's inexpensive and it can bring any outfit up to date. This season you can buy tassels separately and add them to your purse, keychain and even your shoes, bringing those pieces up to date in an inexpensive way.
5. Harmonize Accessories with Each Other and Your Outfit.
By "harmonize" I mean make sure your accessories don't clash with each other or your outfit and make sure that the accessories you select have a common theme. Think about the look you want to create. Are you going for a delicate flowing look with your cute Summer dress? Then your accessories should be minimal and delicate too. Strappy sandals, lightweight necklace and small clutch are perfect to compliment this look. Think about how it would look if you wore that dress with chunky sandals and a heavy, big necklace...It just wouldn't look right. If you are going for an edgy look, pick more dramatic accessories to compliment that statement. Keep the look you want to create in mind and pick accessories accordingly.

I hope you found these tips helpful and feel more confident using accessories to elevate your style and complete your outfits.
